The word, “energy audit” defined in the dictionary, meant: planned sampling and improvement of current costs, meanwhile the word and “energy audit” interpreted into the following meanings:
– obtaining the quantity and the quality of energy consumption or its conversion into new into another form
– defining the times suitable for energy reduction control
– Economic estimation, depending on the procedures of the aforesaid consumption reduction control.
– formulating the improvement recommendations for the process.

Having regarded the current functional evaluation as per industrial process, the priorities of energy and it can be identified and determined. Generally, the units-under the process is: the unit with the lowest performance and with the minimum cost to upgrade the system performance, which is placed at the first priority. Also, the necessary standards should be noticed and respected, concerning: environmental and safety issues. In other words, the energy audit can be interpreted as an industry physician.
As a whole, the energy audit includes: energy analysis and information process for factory, distinguishing the energy bottlenecks in factory and determining the parameters that help us to reduce energy consumption in factory. This process including the study of consumption trend, from the past to the present time, the measurement of energy parameters, and finally, the analysis of the obtained data. The past energy data of a factory can be very effective means at the energy audit. Even, without going into the factory, and studying the three years trend of production and its energy consumption in a factory, and also, asking a couple of queries from the experts of each department, a cheaper waycan be foundfor instance (to make production reach its nominal capacity), in order to considerably curtail both the energy consumption and the costs.
Generally, the solutions, presented are divided into the two parts: mechanical and electrical. However, there can be three types of method, from the cost perspective, including: almost zero cost, low cost, and high cost.
– The energy audit is performed through three stages:
– At the first stage, having visited a factory the defective part (the problem) can be distinguished. For example: it can be understandable, when smoke comes out of exhaust pipe, it shows that the boiler doesn’t function well.
– At the second stage, there is also included measurement means, actually, the measurement devices are mounted within factory, and the energy consumption is measured by them.

The energy audit should be defined in the forms of: evaluation, supervision, and analysis dependent on the energy consumption including: providing the technical report containing the proposals for improvement of energy performance, with the cost –profit analysis, and the reduction plan for the energy consumption.
There are three main operating costs in most industries which include:

– Raw material
– Energy sections: (electrical and thermal, etc.)

If somebody can comprehend the cost or the potential cost saving, in each main operating cost items, then it will be known that the energy position is at a higher level, comparing to the rest.
Therefore, in the energy management, the strategic areas of the cost reduction will be included.
The energy audit helps to understand more the methods of energy and fuel savings in the industries, as well as, to identify the areas, where losses occur in there, or there might be improvement possibility for them. However, the energy audit takes a positive position for the energy cost reduction and for the preventive maintenance and repair measures, as well as, for the quality control planning which are highly important for the production and the operational activities.

– determining the energy saving opportunities, along with, the necessary technical and economical feasibility studies.
Among the important results, out of an audit project are: definition of the effectiveness rate of each project, and the interaction of project performance with the other processing conditions, as well as, definition of the investment capacity, required.
By means of the inputs, resulted from an energy audit, the managers of the unit can conclude proper decisions on the project implementation, leading to savings.

The auditor’s sufficient knowledge of the product process and the production procedure, as well as, its awareness depending on the key concerns and the high consumption at the production process, all in all will make auditor achieve the pre-set objectives quicker, better and more complete, based on these sets of knowledge. Furthermore, precisely determining the consumption condition can be obtained, by means of the field activities, and attending at the unit premises and performance of necessary measurements, however, their correct performance requires precise planning and implementation of the plan in the short-term and suitable time conditions, besides, a complete knowledge of the capabilities of the different measurement equipments. Also, knowing and determining the rate of the effectiveness of the energy saving opportunities requires a complete knowledge of the process condition, proper understanding of the conditions and the existing potentials, besides, determination of the mutual interactions of the changes, offered at work condition.

The energy audit can be conducted at three different levels, with regard to every organization’s need, according to Standard ISO 50002. However, it is possible that the energy audit details can be included between the levels 1 and 3 at certain organizations’ cases that are the level 1 comprises the minimum details, required for the energy audit, and the level 3, at contrast, holds a comprehensive and the most complete audit level. The proper level of the details, required for the energy audit is determined, with regard to the audit aim, the consumptions and use of energy, and the resources available to the audit. As a preliminary activity at the audit, it is necessary that the available input data defined for the energy audit, besides, to determine whether the inputs are sufficient for a higher audit level, and if complementary measurement is needed; its range should be determined, too.
In order to perform the audit, at levels 2 and 3, it is necessary to determine the existing tariffs or the index tariff of the energy costs for the economical analyses, with regard to the annual energy changes, in compliance with the law of “the objective subsidy”.

Generally, regardless of the level and the details, intended for the energy audit; it is necessary, to perform the energy audit process, in accordance with Standard: ISO 50002.
