Definition: the information systems are computerized systems, aiming at storing and processing the data. A part of these systems, besides, the figures and the letters, is also used to prepare drawings, called: location information system. Geographic Information System (GIS) operates on the data, in a manner, dealing with geographical location. In other words, GIS collects, produces, stores, manipulates and analyzes the data, besides, keeping the real spatial world. Therefore, all the disciplines obtain their data from the earth are taken as a GIS user. Due to its integrity and its general over viewing, and using systematic perceptiveness in geographical data, geography enriches this system, besides, using GIS in geospatial (location) analysis. GIS application to electricity industry
GIS is employed to prepare location data-base of installations, the different infrastructures and features. By means of this system, the distance among different features is measured, and useful information is obtained through making ‘Query” out of different layers. Among, the applications of this system in the electricity industry are:
– Providing limit drawings for different features dependent on such as: substations, power plants, transmission lines . . . .
– plotting brace and right of way (row) of the regions’ features , according to the standards, routes optimization of overhead transmission lines, determining suitable location for construction of new installations for instance: substations and power plants;the transmission lines “incident management”, crisis management and “the network risks” , load estimation, (geographical) load spatial distribution, environmental assessment around power plants ; controlling the changes trend of land uses, as well as, checking the changes prediction and capacities assessment, and the development restrictions of the units and the capacity of the power plants, in future.
